Urbandub Sends A Message to Pat Jalbuena of Kerplunk!

Pat in his Dub shirt on the island of Boracay with his beloved beer and tequila.

Message?  Well it definitely sucks that he’s leaving! But a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!  It’s just great that we’ll get to work with him before he goes.  But despite that, he may be gone for awhile but our friendship will remain.  He’s one of my best friends and I can only wish him the best all the time!  Good luck & Jah bless my bruva! - Gabby

Sitting at the helm of Kerplunk Studios is head engineer Pat Jalbuena who has been part of the local music scene, recording bands such as Maryzark, Angulo, Enemies of Saturn, Blue Jean Junkies, Kjwan, Up Dharma Down, Beach Head, Steady Machine, Subscapular, Carlos Castano, Menaya, Astrojuan, Pitik, Sinosikat, Gaijin, and Urbandub.  His experience and skill behind the mixing board has led him to work with musicians in all kinds of genres.

Quite recently he was in charge of recording a few tracks for the TeeDee (Music and Merch Bundle) that Urbandub released entitled Sending A Message.  Not only did he record the tracks at his quaint studio in Makati City, but the video for Sending A Message was also shot at Kerplunk Studios.

What some of you might or might not know about Pat, is that he’s migrating to the States and will be gone indefinitely.  It makes it indeed a very sad day for the Manila music scene.  Pat not only has been responsible for engineering these great bands, but Kerplunk Productions has been operating for years now and has produced some of the best gigs in town.  Ie. Greyhoundz playing to the first ever mosh pit inside of Saguijo and the legendary Kerplunk Anniversaries!

Being that Pat and Urbandub are very close, and the deep connection between Pats fate and Dub’s recent recording and video, I thought to put them together and create a short interview dedicated to Pat, from Urbandub.

That’s me with Pat and Gabby on the beach not too long ago.

These are the results of that interview:

Atthewomb.com - Its been a while since you guys recorded at Kerplunk, can you tell me what was the experience like?

Gabby           -  It was definitely a great experience. Working with Pat has been a long time dream of mine. Working in Kerplunk and the relaxed       atmosphere there always makes writing and recording so easy for me and the band.

John - All in all the recording process was quite relaxed, especially towards the end.

Atthewomb.com - How was it different recording with Pat this time as compared to the other times you recorded there?

Gabby           - It was relatively easier because of the fact that we know what each other wants in terms of the output of the song and the sound we want.

John           - We had more gear to choose from (thank you JB music) and Pat had more tricks up his sleeve smile

Atthewomb.com - What made you decide to shoot the video at Kerplunk Studios? I find it very interesting that you decided to film it there since your videos are all normally not only performance videos but sometimes include actors and stories.  Why didn’t you do the whole high production video that you usually do?

Gabby             - Actually, the video was a spur of the moment thing. Our Label (MCA Music) and management (Sonic Boom Philippines) decision, so the band really had nothing to do with that.

John - I think the decision had a lot to do with the song being really personal.  So it seemed more appropriate to shoot the video where we recorded all of the tracks for the song’s “immortalization.” :D

Atthewomb.com - At the end of the video, Janjan is seen giving the thumbs up and Lalay is seen smiling, how comfortable were you in shooting this video and do you think that you might make other videos in the future with this type of feel to it?

John - Very comfortable because the whole thing was shot without all the high production equipment.  As for the second question, if the treatment of the video suits the song, why not.  So yeah, maybe.

Atthewomb.com - Will you be doing any work with Pat and Kerplunk Studios before he leaves for the States?

Gabby           - Yes! Definitely! We’re gearing up to record our 6th album with him!

Atthewomb.com - Do you guys have a message that you would like to send to Pat?  I know he’s been a very good friend for many years and you have worked with him on and off in the passed, how do you feel about him leaving?

Gabby           - Message?  Well it definitely sucks that he’s leaving! But a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!  It’s just great that we’ll get to work with him before he goes.  But despite that, he may be gone for awhile but our friendship will remain.  He’s one of my best friends and I can only wish him the best all the time!  Good luck & Jah bless my bruva!

John - Thanks for believing in and loving Urbandub’s music and a lot of people are going to miss you smile
