Urbandub: Where’s Lalay?

When Urbandub played Lucena City last May 11, 2012 for the Tanduay First Five Tour, many people wondered why Lalay wasn’t onstage with them.  Instead, Rico Blanco’s bassist Dave Delfin and John Dinopol played bass.

After the concert, a message was placed on the Facebook Fan Page of Urbandub, asking fans to pray for Lalay’s quick recovery.

Mr. Bones and the Boneyard Circus have been in my sights since they first came out of the dark and into the spotlight a couple of years ago.  I was given a copy of their EP and loved it.  It was dark, it was theatrical, they spoke of zombies, and their music video of Haunted Wonderland had a coffin in it.  This stuff was right up my alley and I could completely relate to the visuals they were putting on to match the music.

They then released Horror Scene in 2009 and went on to releasing another music video as well as winning the Favorite New Indie Artist at the 2011 Myx Music Awards

In 2011, they became part of the Jack Daniels JD Set Philippines where they are now part of the final 7 competing to represent the country in the coming JD Set Asia Pacific International event this 2012/2013.

Urbandub to record new album.

Urbandub for Vans.

In November of 2004, I was invited by MCA Music to come and witness one of the final stages of the recording of Urbandub’s The Apparition.  It was their 5th album and my first time to enter the studio to experience the magic that Urbandub creates while within those walls.

It is now May of 2012 and I’ve learned that I will once again be a fly on the wall while watching and listening to Urbandub record their next album.

Waking up in Calbayog on May 5, 2012 was easy.  There was no morning flight to catch, and check out at the hotel was scheduled at 12PM.  We were able to take a shower, get dressed, and even hang out at the hotel lobby and have breakfast while waiting for the entourage of Urbandub to get there.

We were told the land trip to Tacloban would take around 4-5 hours.  At 1PM we got into the vans and began our road trip.  Nothing much to say about the journey, we stopped only to use the bathroom and to smoke a cigarette.  As we entered Leyte, we crossed the San Juanico bridge, which to me is the most beautiful bridge I’ve seen all my life.  There, we ran into some of the guys of Parokya Ni Edgar.

Oh dear sweet Calbayog, where do I begin?

First of all, I’m really sorry, but I didn’t even know where Calbayog was.  When I learned that it was in Samar, all I could think of was that when we were in Boracay also for the Tanduay T5 tour, I got to hang out with some bartender girls from Samar.  Didn’t even know if it was north, south, east or west.

What I do know about Calbayog now though is very different.  These guys are the best and really know how to party!  I know we said that Bataan was the best so far, and I don’t want to compare anymore as it doesn’t really matter, but Calbayog was fucking awesome!

Bataan might have been great fun, but that isn’t to say that traveling to Bulacan the following day didn’t have its share of excitement and adventure!  For Urbandub, there was plenty of action to make for an interesting day.

For one thing, Franco was booked to play the afternoon slot of the PULP Summerslam, which meant that Gabby and Janjan had to leave early to make that gig, and then come back to play Tanduay’s T5 show in Bulacan, only to head back to the Amoranto Stadium to play Slam for Urbandub.

With the Tanduay First Five Tour now on it’s 5th and 6th legs, together with Urbandub, we got in the van and made our way to our hotel for our night in Bataan.  It was a hot Friday afternoon and though well on our way, we had no idea that going to Bataan would prove to be the best night of the tour, so far.

UPDATE: Tots Tolentino has already deleted his status update.

There’s another war on Facebook happening, as acclaimed jazz musician Tots Tolentino posted a status last April 29, 2012 regarding his thoughts on rap music. “Rap is not music. Ewan ko kung ano ang musical diyan,” is what he said that made the Filipino hiphop community enraged.

April 20, 2012, World Pot Smoking Day.  The Tanduay First Five Rock Royalty bands had all gathered into the terminal 2 Philippine Airlines Airport as we were on our way to beautiful Dumaguete City.

Now on our 4th leg of the tour, and with having had a week of rest from last weeks Myx Summer Fest in Boracay, we were all ready and excited to leave town for another rocking concert.

Enjoy some highlights from our trip to Dumaguete, along with some fun facts about Urbandub and the rest of the T5 bands!
