The Black Star Tour: Avril Lavigne Live in Manila 2012

“If you were there, you’ll see lots of ladies wearing skirts too. SOOO AVRIL! ♥ smile” - Janella

Canadian pop punk princess Avril Lavigne had her second concert, “The Black Star Tour: Avril Lavigne Live in Manila 2012”, in the Philippines last February 16, 2011 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. I have loved Avril Lavigne for years so spending almost everything that I’ve got on my first pay was so worth it! I have really been waiting for that day, and I did not expect that that same day would be more special & memorable. When I was on my way to the Big Dome, I received one of the biggest news in my life. Yes, I passed the Nurse Licensure Examination! I was so surprised, couldn’t contain my happiness, and tears of joy were flowing.

Okay, so let’s talk about the concert proper. I entered the gate at around 8pm and the show was just about to start. Someday Dream was the opening act but I wasn’t able to pay much attention to their performance since I was so overwhelmed by the number of greetings/congratulatory messages I was receiving thru texts and calls.

As the lights were dimmed, the crowd started chanting Avril’s name. The band started playing the intro and Avril made her entrance to the twinkling notes of Black Star. Black Star is the namesake of Avril’s current world tour and it is also the lead track for her most recent album. The Big Dome was filled with neon-light-up stars and it was so amazing to see glowsticks being waved in the air. After singing the Black Star, Avril performed an upbeat What The Hell. Everyone was jumping and singing along with her, followed by the song that started it all for her, Sk8er Boi. The screaming of the crowd grew louder; I’m talking deafeningly loud screaming and chanting. It was her first ever single and everyone knew every word. I, together with the other fans, enjoyed singing along and having a rockin’ good time. Following Sk8er Boi, she performed He Wasn’t & I Always Get What I Want. I loved how Avril jumped around the stage during her upbeat performances. She was constantly thanking her fans while giving her breath-taking smile. Though she had a straight schedule of tours before her concert here, which I know were very exhausting, she still gave her best & really did not disappoint.

She performed hits like Alice, When You’re Gone, and Wish You Were Here, from her latest album. A musical piece of Unwanted was also played by the band, then followed by Avril’s performance of Girlfriend, one of the songs in which the crowd enjoyed & participated in the most. She also sang B.O.B.’s Airplane, and it was also great! Then she performed My Happy Ending, Don’t Tell Me, Smile and I’m With You, some of the crowd’s favorites. I really enjoyed singing along with her. There were also times when my seatmate would ask me the title of the song. She was kind of amazed because I knew all the songs & she heard me singing during every song. After that performance, Avril thanked all the fans there, bid her goodbye, then left the stage with the band.

And as expected, the audience demanded and asked for more. The lights remained dimmed and no one left their seats. After few minutes of screaming & chanting, Avril finally hit the stage again for their encore. The band played a musical piece of Push and it was followed by Avril’s performance of I Love You. I loved how she would project herself every time the camera would focus on her. She’s so cute & fabulous! Then finally down to her final song. The band started playing the intro of Complicated and everyone was screaming like there was no tomorrow. Avril sang the song and there were parts where she had the audience sing the lines back to her. That was astonishing! Then she ended the show with her one-handed cartwheel. Awesome Avril!

All in all, I really had a great time watching her concert. I can tell that Avril’s really such an entertainer! It takes a hell lot of stamina for all these songs & she just kept singing, slamming her guitar & jumping all around. She gave it her all & really deserved all the support she’s getting from her fans. I’d definitely love to see her again next time around. The Black Star Tour is like the Best Damn Thing ever! And hell yeah, she’s the M****** Princess!  Thanks to Wilbros Live & Midas Promotions for bringing Avril Lavinge here to the country.
